While summer is generally a time of relaxation and vacation for most college students, the grind does not stop for our student-athletes. Some of them are still in season, some are starting their off-season workouts, and most are taking summer classes. Work hasn’t stopped for them, therefore it certainly hasn’t stopped for us, as their academic support system!
At the conclusion of the spring semester everyone is extremely fatigued – students and staff alike. It’s completely normal and we encourage you to take full advantage of any down time you may have. Lay out by the pool, travel, sleep… whatever your heart desires, but don’t forget to continue to stimulate your mind. This can be done by reading books of your choosing, watching interesting documentaries instead of reality TV, or playing word games on your phone. We need your brain in tip-top shape whether you’re working with us over the summer or returning in the fall.
The academic success of our students is a year-long effort. Once the first summer session starts here at FSU, so does tutoring. Each summer looks different here at SAAS, based on the classes that students are taking. Although there aren’t as many appointments going on as there are in the fall and spring, we like the make sure that the quality of the tutoring sessions remains consistent. Here are a few reminders for those of you who will be staying with SAAS throughout the summer months:
- Be professional. Although it’s summer, this is still a job. Make sure that you’re on time, in dress code, and ready to work.
- Be efficient. Make sure that each session is productive and that students are able to walk away with something tangible. We do not want these sessions to be a waste of time for anyone.
- Know your materials. Constantly review notes and concepts from the classes that you are tutoring. You may not currently be in the class so it’s important that you still know how to adequately assist your students with assignments and exam prep.
- Ask questions if you need help. Your LTA’s are here for YOU. Be sure to utilize them.
- Have fun! After all, it IS summer!
The next few months are supposed to be a time to decompress. So don’t forget to sit back and relax, but in between that time – let’s get to work!
